"The Artist"
Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 12:57PM After some degree of hesitancy and reluctance, I'm happy at last to post this new video with old friend and painter John Borden Evans. At times during the months between our shooting in March and the completion, I was certain there wasn't enough material beyond the standard talking heads to generate much interest. It needed some time to percolate, while I accumulated enough alternative material to accompany the vocal/text portion that is the overt heft of the piece.
Don't talk to me about deadlines. With material that is a mass of undigested sound and images, plodding along without a script, I'm simply looking for the bits that tell me what people believe to be true about themselves. Whether I can impose another layer that interprets that belief to reveal my own beliefs is a level of complexity that probably is beyond a piece 5 minutes long. My intent with these documents is to get out of the way and let these accomplished artists - Russ Warren, Megan Marlatt, and John Evans - have their say. But it does take some time to find the needle, and I can't necessarily be pinned down to a time frame.
Thanks to CLW for her editorial suggestions, which confirmed what I knew was true.

Kent -- Really nice film, nicely edited. I really like the end shot where John turns the painting end on to emphasize the tree line that is in the painting. Good Job!
Thanks Dave, couldn't have done it without your lens!
